Activities to try at home – Earthquake Wave Race

Try being a racing Earth quake wave with your friends. Follow the instructions below, and watch the video to see how to play.

  • Line up facing forwards
  • Pretend to be a compressional (back and forward motion) P wave by “passing on” the wave from the back of the line to the front by tapping the shoulders of the person in front.
  • Pretend to be a transverse (side to side motion) S wave by reaching your arms out side to side before passing on the the person in front by tapping their shoulders.
  • Create two lines with one pretending to be a wave and one pretending to be an S wave, and have a race to see who gets to the front first!
  • Which wave do you think travels fastest?
